Zhou Discusses Challenges in Sauber-Audi Talks

Guanyu Zhou acknowledges the need to remain vigilant to ensure he doesn’t lose his spot in Formula 1.

Currently in his second season with Alfa Romeo, the 24-year-old Chinese driver is amidst the brand’s progression to full works status, with Audi set to take full ownership and control by 2026.

Valtteri Bottas, who’s set to continue with Alfa Romeo-Sauber in 2024, believes Zhou should be offered a renewed contract. “He’s made a big step in performance but also confidence and technical knowledge,” the Finn commented.

“I think he really deserves a place in Formula 1.” However, there’s speculation regarding potential challenges in discussions between Zhou’s Chinese sponsors and Sauber’s evolving management.

A key figure in this transition, Andreas Seidl, is primarily overseeing the preparations for Audi’s impending involvement.

Zhou openly shared that his 2024 position isn’t confirmed. “That’s of course the goal,” he shared with Sky Deutschland. “But it’s not easy because of Audi coming and all of these things, and they need a little more time.

“For me of course it’s better to have a longer contract to be a little more relaxed than just getting a one-year contract again,” Zhou elaborated.

The buzz is that Theo Pourchaire, Sauber’s upcoming talent and likely Formula 2 champion this year, might be the one to fill Zhou’s shoes if needed.

“There aren’t many vacancies left,” Zhou recognized, “so I’m very careful to stay where I am.”
