Mercedes team leader Toto Wolff has stated that Helmut Marko’s potential departure would represent a significant setback for Red Bull.
As Marko faces the possibility of disciplinary measures from Red Bull, this development adds another layer to the ongoing saga involving team principal Christian Horner.
An employee who levelled accusations of misconduct against Horner has been suspended by the firm, with Red Bull GmbH, the parent company, having dismissed the case.
The matter only came to light through a report in the Dutch press, suggesting the investigation into Marko is centred on the manner in which the information was disclosed.
In response to the unfolding situation, Wolff shared with ORF, “If the team loses Helmut, it would certainly be a loss for Red Bull and for the team. Helmut was – or is – our favourite enemy, but he is a real racer.”
“We have one seat available, in 2025 and 2026, but Max will drive wherever there is the fastest car, and today that is the Red Bull,” reiterated Wolff.
“We’ve been talking to each other for ten years, ever since he joined Formula 1. I have a good relationship with Jos [Verstappen’s father] and also with Max.
“But that doesn’t mean that you would see a change on the professional side in the short term.”
Max Verstappen, after securing the pole position at the Jeddah circuit was asked if Marko’s situation might influence his career to which he stated: “I have a lot of respect for Helmut and what we have achieved together.
“My loyalty to him is very big, and also I have always expressed this to everyone within the team, everyone high up, that he is an important part in my decision making for all the time in the future as well within the team.
“So, it is very important he stays within the team, including of course everyone else because it is a whole team effort.”
