Alonso Talks F1 Advantage with Honda

Fernando Alonso has affirmed his commitment to Formula 1, announcing his intention to race with Aston Martin for the next two seasons, while also revealing plans to reunite with Honda in 2026.

Alonso is optimistic about the advantage he’ll have in 2026 with Honda rejoining as Aston Martin’s power unit supplier. He recently confirmed the extension of his contract with Aston Martin, ensuring his presence on the grid until the culmination of the 2026 season.

His tenure will coincide with the introduction of a new cycle of regulations in two years. These regulations will significantly alter the aerodynamics and power units, presenting a fresh challenge for drivers and teams alike.

As part of this shift, Honda has opted to return as a supplier, forging a partnership with Aston Martin.

Currently, Red Bull is utilizing Honda’s engines, benefiting from a power unit freeze implemented in 2022. This freeze allows Red Bull to continue using the championship-winning engine from the previous year, ensuring continuity in their performance.

When pressed about his confidence in Honda’s competitiveness in 2026, Alonso expressed faith in the manufacturer’s current success. He noted, “Well, they are winning the championship now. They are demonstrating that they have the discipline and the work that is needed to succeed in Formula 1.”

Alonso faced challenges during his time with McLaren from 2015 to 2017 due to issues with Honda power units, including concerns over pace and reliability.

Despite the difficulties of the past, Alonso emphasized his enthusiasm for reuniting with a works team.

“Obviously, new regulations, no one knows what could happen in 2026. But we are extremely happy to work with Honda. And to be, as I said, a works team for the power unit, I think it makes a huge difference to what we currently have.

“So that’s a plus and that’s one of the reasons that I stayed into the new regulations, and to have the opportunity to work with Honda again. I feel that we will have an advantage.”
