Tragedy struck at the Formula Regional European Championship as an 18-year-old driver lost their life during the Alpine round held at Spa-Francorchamps.
The driver, Dilano van ‘t Hoff from MP Motorsport, was involved in a collision with Adam Fitzgerald during the second race on a wet Saturday morning. The accident occurred at the exit of Radillon and the beginning of the Kemmel Straight.
This unfortunate incident raises concerns about the safety record of Spa, especially since a similar tragedy claimed the life of Anthoine Hubert in 2019 during an F2 race at the same section of the track. Several other crashes at Eau Rouge and Radillon have occurred since then, prompting significant safety improvements to be made at the top of the hill.
Confirming van ‘t Hoff’s death, a FRECA statement read: “Formula Regional European Championship by Alpine sadly announces the death of MP Motorsport driver Dilano Van ‘T Hoff.
“The incident happened during Spa-Francorchamps race 2.
“We want to express our sincere condolences to the family, team and friends.
“Royal Automobile Club of Belgium, the Circuit of Spa-Francorchamps and SRO Motorsports Group join Alpine and ACI in expressing their sincerest condolences to the driver’s family, team and friends.”
