Toto Wolff, the head of Mercedes Formula 1, playfully hinted at the prospect of offering Helmut Marko a position if he is let go by Red Bull.
The future of Marko as Red Bull’s motorsport advisor has been cast into uncertainty following indications in Saudi Arabia that he might face immediate suspension.
This situation arises amidst an inquiry by the Red Bull energy drinks company into suspicions regarding Marko’s potential involvement in the disclosure of confidential details to journalists regarding allegations against team principal Christian Horner.
Red Bull had maintained a strict media blackout due to the sensitive nature of the claims made against Horner by a female employee. However, despite efforts to keep the matter confidential, information about the case found its way to the press.
Marko is scheduled to meet with Red Bull managing director Oliver Mintzlaff in Saudi Arabia on Saturday, during which he may learn about his fate and whether he will retain his position.
This decision could have significant implications for the future of the Red Bull F1 team, as Max Verstappen has made it clear that he could also depart if Marko exits.
Verstappen’s potential departure from Red Bull could be viewed favorably by Mercedes, which is keen on securing the Dutchman as a replacement for Lewis Hamilton.
Toto Wolff, the team principal of Mercedes, has outlined a strategy to make the team more appealing to Verstappen by bringing Marko on board in a non-executive role, akin to the position Niki Lauda once held.
“We’re missing our old mascot anyway,” Wolff grinned during an interview.
“Then we’ll just take Helmut. He’s the right age. He doesn’t have a red cap, but then he’ll come to us.”
He further stated: “Helmut is not a child of sadness and was – or is – our favorite enemy. But he is a real racer. If they lose Helmut, it will certainly be a loss for Red Bull and for the team.”
Wolff continues to entertain the possibility of Verstappen switching teams, yet he acknowledges that Mercedes must deliver a swifter car to sway him.
He stated; “We have a seat available in 2025 and 2026.” But Max will drive where there is the fastest car, and today that is the Red Bull.”
Pressed on whether there have been discussions with Jos, the father of the triple world champion, Wolff responded: “We have been talking to each other for 10 years since Max has been in Formula 1.
“I have a good relationship with Jos and also with Max. But that doesn’t mean that anyone on the professional side would see a change in the short term.”
