Sebastian Vettel has recently hinted at the possibility of making a comeback to Formula 1 after his retirement.
Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff has emphasized that Sebastian Vettel remains a significant figure in Formula 1, stating, “Sebastian is someone you can never discount,” amidst speculations about the former world champion’s return to the sport.
Vettel, a four-time world champion, has stirred up discussions in recent weeks regarding his potential return to Formula 1. There have been suggestions that he might rejoin the grid and take up a seat in a Formula 1 car once again.
Speculation is rife that Vettel could be a contender for a position at Mercedes, possibly replacing Lewis Hamilton, who is set to depart for Ferrari next year. Notably, Hamilton himself has expressed support for this scenario, expressing his interest in seeing Vettel assume his seat at Mercedes.
Vettel bid farewell to Formula 1 after the 2022 season, marking the end of a highly successful career in the sport. His retirement was a significant moment, drawing the curtains on a chapter in Formula 1 history.
When questioned about the possibility of Mercedes considering Vettel for the upcoming season, Wolff responded to the media by saying, “Sebastian is someone that you can never discount.
“I think his track record is phenomenal and sometimes maybe taking a break is also good to re-evaluate what’s important for you and refine your motivation. As I said before, we haven’t taken the decision yet and it’s not something that we plan to do in the next few weeks.”
Wolff has affirmed that he has narrowed down potential candidates to a final shortlist but refrained from disclosing the number of drivers in consideration.
Apart from Sebastian Vettel, other names mentioned as potential contenders include Fernando Alonso and Carlos Sainz, along with Mercedes junior driver Kimi Antonelli.
Wolff emphasized that Mercedes is being deliberate in its decision-making process as it assesses the most suitable option. “I know that the driver market is very dynamic,” he remarked.
“Some of the really good guys they’re about to sign for some of the other teams and we want to continue to have these discussions and keep the options open.
“But at that stage, I think it’s much too early for us to commit to a driver whether they’re a very young or whether they’re very experienced. The next the next few months will give us more clues.”
