Max Verstappen is aiming for a triumphant performance in the upcoming Japanese Grand Prix, determined to bounce back from his untimely retirement in the last race.
The reigning world champion’s hopes were dashed at Melbourne’s Albert Park Circuit due to a brake-related failure, which led to a minor explosion as he made his way into the pit-lane.
This premature exit put an end to Verstappen’s impressive streak of nine consecutive race victories, with Carlos Sainz being the one to halt the Dutch driver’s domination for the second time.
Notably, it was in the Japanese GP following the 2023 Singapore Grand Prix where Sainz had previously stopped Verstappen’s 10-race winning spree. With this history in mind, the 26-year-old is prepared to mount a strong comeback at Suzuka.
“Suzuka is always a fantastic circuit for racing,” Verstappen remarked. “As a team, we’ve created many cherished memories here over the years, including clinching last year’s Constructors’ Championship and securing my second Drivers’ Championship.
“It’s been refreshing to have some downtime with family and friends before diving back into racing, and it’s always enjoyable to spend time in Tokyo as well.”
Verstappen has emerged victorious in the last two outings at Suzuka, positioning him to potentially become the first driver since Michael Schumacher to claim three consecutive wins in Japan.
Schumacher achieved this remarkable feat from 2000 to 2002, a record Verstappen could match with a strong resurgence following the Australian GP setback.
“The recent race in Melbourne was disappointing, but these setbacks are part of the sport,” Verstappen reflected. “Nevertheless, securing nine consecutive wins is an impressive accomplishment, so we’re determined to come back even stronger this weekend.”
Confidence abounds within the team for the Suzuka race weekend. Verstappen expressed, “Suzuka is an iconic track that’s always a joy to drive on.
“With its abundance of high-speed corners and high tire wear, we need to maximize our performance, especially considering the predicted rain for this weekend. I’m eager to get back behind the wheel and fight for victory.”
With his eyes firmly set on redemption, Verstappen is poised to tackle the challenges of Suzuka and reclaim his winning form on the Japanese circuit.
