Toto Wolff emphasizes the importance of humility in Mercedes’ quest for a 2023 Grand Prix victory, aiming to avoid a rare occurrence during his tenure where the team remains winless.
Challenges with the W14 car, combined with Red Bull RB19’s overwhelming superiority, have prevented Mercedes from contending for a victory throughout the season.
However, Lewis Hamilton managed to secure second place in Australia and Spain. In Singapore, the Silver Arrows had an opportunity to win by switching to fresh Medium tires under the Virtual Safety Car.
Unfortunately, their progress was thwarted as George Russell and Hamilton were unable to overtake second-placed Lando Norris in the final stages. This was partly due to leader Carlos Sainz strategically using the McLaren DRS to hinder Russell and Hamilton from passing.
The Brackley-based team aims to uphold its tradition of winning at least one race annually under Wolff’s guidance since the 2012 season. Amidst this ongoing quest, Wolff has emphasized the importance of maintaining humility within the team.
The Mercedes team principal speaking to the media stated:”I’d like to say that every year we have raced we have had a win at least, but you’ve got to stay humble about it.”
“We have had a super strong Red Bull all year, it was Ferrari that was strong in Monza [and Singapore].
” I hope that we have more opportunities to race at the front, we’ll see in six, seven days again where we are [in Japan] then Brazil can be a good one for us, we’ll bring some stuff to Austin, so, some fun races ahead and I certainly look very much forward to them.
“This car has been a surprise box all along. I bet if you asked Red Bull why they didn’t get it right [in Singapore] I am not sure they know. I
“These ground effect cars are just very difficult to setup. If you fall out of the window, you have no performance and that has happened to us more than we got it right.”
