Sainz’s Race Against Time: Mercedes or Audi?

Carlos Sainz finds himself in a precarious position akin to a high-stakes game of poker, as rumors swirl that Audi has set a deadline for his commitment, rumored to be until Monaco. However, Sainz appears to be biding his time, waiting for Max Verstappen’s decision regarding Mercedes.

Cast aside by Ferrari before the start of the current season, Sainz was anticipated to secure a spot at Sauber, set to be rebranded as Audi in 2026.

Yet, with Lewis Hamilton’s move to Ferrari creating a vacancy at Mercedes, Sainz is reportedly gambling on the opportunity to partner with George Russell at the Brackley-based team.

Speculation intensified when renowned Spanish journalist Antonio Lobato asserted on social media that Sainz had surpassed a deadline imposed by Audi, all in pursuit of a potentially more competitive seat.

However, Sainz refuted these claims during media interactions in Miami, asserting, “No, that’s not correct. There’s no truth about it. As I’ve said before, there are certain things that don’t depend fully on myself and there’s going to be some waiting to be done.”

One of these uncertain factors, according to reports from F1-Insider.com, revolves around the future plans of Max Verstappen.

Despite public overtures from Toto Wolff, the Red Bull driver may not be transitioning to Mercedes for the upcoming season, but speculation remains rife that he could make the switch in 2026. This uncertainty regarding Verstappen’s intentions appears to be the crux of Sainz’s indecision.

Described as “the catch” by F1-Insider, the dilemma for Sainz lies in Wolff’s purported offer, which reportedly extends only to the 2026 season, effectively comprising a one-year contract.

“The Stuttgart team wants to remain flexible if Max Verstappen decides late to say goodbye to Red Bull or junior Andrea Kimi Antonelli is ready for Mercedes as early as 2026.”

Therefore, Sainz faces a crucial decision: opt for the assurance of a single season with Mercedes or commit to a potentially enduring partnership with Audi. However, Audi’s patience is not boundless.

With Nico Hulkenberg already confirmed as one of Stake’s drivers for 2025, reports suggest that Valtteri Bottas will bid farewell to the team, contingent upon Sainz’s verdict regarding his future. Additionally, Zhou Guanyu’s position hinges on Sainz’s decision.

The deadline for Sainz’s resolution looms until the Monaco Grand Prix.

“Sainz doesn’t have much time left for his dangerous game of poker,” asserts a German publication. “Audi wants an answer by the GP in Monaco in two and a half weeks at the latest.

“Otherwise, the people of Ingolstadt will look for an alternative. Among others, the French Alpine pilots Esteban Ocon and Pierre Gasly are on the list as Plan B.

“If Sainz chooses Mercedes, he could be without a contract again in 2026 when Verstappen or Antonelli come and the door is closed at Audi.”

Regarding Red Bull, the publication contends that the “door is closed,” with Sergio Perez poised to continue with the team in 2025.
