Carlos Sainz’s potential moves for the upcoming season are dwindling, with one major option now closed off.
According to F1-Insider, a switch to Red Bull is no longer on the table as they have decided to retain Sergio Perez and extend his contract. This development leaves Sainz with limited choices, prompting what is described as a risky gamble.
With Red Bull out of contention, Sainz finds himself engaged in a high-stakes negotiation with just two viable alternatives. Sauber, set to transform into Audi by 2026, has publicly expressed interest in securing Sainz as their lead driver for the next season.
Meanwhile, Mercedes presents another opportunity due to Lewis Hamilton’s imminent move to Ferrari, creating a vacancy in the Mercedes lineup.
Reports suggest that Mercedes has extended an offer to Sainz for the 2025 season, albeit with a significant caveat—it’s a one-year contract.
This stipulation indicates Mercedes’ desire to maintain flexibility, potentially for luring Max Verstappen in 2026 or promoting Andrea Kimi Antonelli. Accepting this offer would mean Sainz risks facing a similar uncertain situation next year.
Alternatively, Sainz could consider Sauber’s proposition, which includes a multi-year deal spanning into the Audi era and the introduction of new F1 regulations. This offer also involves partnering with Nico Hulkenberg, forming a refreshed duo for the team’s transition.
However, Audi has set a deadline for Sainz to make a decision, mandating a response by the F1 Monaco Grand Prix, providing a two-week window for deliberation.
In the event Sainz opts against Sauber’s offer, Audi has backup options in the form of Esteban Ocon and Pierre Gasly from the Alpine team. The looming deadline adds pressure to Sainz’s decision-making process, emphasizing the urgency of the situation.
Furthermore, the prospect of joining Aston Martin has already dissolved for Sainz following Fernando Alonso’s contract extension, further narrowing his potential avenues for the upcoming season.
