The finalization of Audi’s acquisition of the Sauber Formula 1 team is swiftly approaching as the organization prepares for its anticipated debut in the 2026 season.
Reports indicate that the German automaker Audi has concluded its takeover of the Sauber team ahead of its scheduled entry into the Formula 1 championship in 2026.
Audi had initially revealed its intention to participate in Formula 1 as a power unit supplier in August 2022, later confirming its plans to establish itself as a fully operational factory team.
A pivotal agreement was reached with Sauber to assume control of the Swiss-based team’s operations, timed to coincide with the introduction of new technical regulations.
Having acquired a 25 percent stake in the Sauber team in early 2023, Audi is believed to have recently finalized the acquisition of the remaining 75 percent, marking a significant step forward in its Formula 1 ambitions.
The announcement effectively dispels any lingering uncertainties surrounding Audi’s entry into Formula 1, dispelling rumors that the company may have been hesitant to proceed with its plans.
Amid changes in leadership at Audi following its decision to join the Formula 1 grid, speculations had arisen suggesting a potential withdrawal or sale of the F1 project.
However, the appointment of Gernot Dollner as Audi CEO in place of Markus Duesmann in 2023, followed by Dollner’s reaffirmation late last year of the commitment to the 2026 entry, reinforced Audi’s determination to participate in the sport.
Audi’s inaugural season will coincide with the implementation of new technical regulations that will supersede the existing chassis and power unit rules.
Formula 1’s shift towards greater electrification of engines and the adoption of 100 percent sustainable fuel aligns with Audi’s strategic direction towards sustainability and innovation.
