According to De Telegraaf, the eight-time race winner from Australia will replace Dutchman Nyck de Vries at AlphaTauri for this weekend’s Hungarian Grand Prix.
De Vries is one of only two drivers on the F1 grid without a point this season and has been publically chastised by Red Bull consultant Helmut Marko.
Daniel Ricciardo has been out of the sport since the end of the 2022 season, as McLaren cancelled his contract following a disappointing season.
He is likely to rejoin Red Bull’s B-Team AlphaTauri after conducting a tyre test for them at Silverstone.
De Telegraaf reports that Marko, who had already acknowledged it was a “mistake” to select De Vries over Mick Schumacher this season, made the choice.
However, they will turn to Ricciardo since Schumacher is obligated to act as Mercedes’ backup driver.
From 2012 through 2018, he competed with the team, initially driving for Toro Rosso, AlphaTauri’s predecessor.
Red Bull and Marko have a history of switching drivers mid-season; in 2016, Daniil Kvyat replaced Max Verstappen, and in 2019, Pierre Gasly replaced Alex Albon.
