Helmut Marko has shared insights into discussions regarding Sergio Perez’s contract at Red Bull.
Marko has implied that Red Bull is hesitant to agree to Sergio Perez’s request for a three-year contract extension. Perez’s current agreement is set to expire at the culmination of the 2024 season, with several contenders vying for the opportunity to partner with Max Verstappen in 2025.
Despite Perez’s strong start to the season, securing four podium finishes in five races and currently occupying second place in the Drivers’ standings behind Verstappen, negotiations with Red Bull’s motorsport advisor Marko regarding a potential contract extension for a fifth season are ongoing.
Nevertheless, Marko has hinted that Perez’s initial demands are unlikely to be met at this stage. “We are not yet in a position to finalize everything,” Marko disclosed to Motorsport.NL.
“But it has nothing to do with regulations, he knows he has to perform. First he wanted a three-year contract, but we will find a solution.”
Following the Japanese Grand Prix, Perez discussed his belief that his future would be determined soon, within a month of the Suzuka race.
In response, Horner indicated that Perez’s timeframe was not aligned with the team’s plans, stating: “We’re in a situation where we’re very happy with our two drivers, but don’t need to make a decision until much later in the year.
“Max is on a long-term contract, and Checo is out of contract, but driving exceptionally well so far this season. Sergio of course would like to make an announcement tomorrow undoubtedly, but we as a team aren’t in a particular rush.
“But as I say, at this point in time, we’re very happy with the line-up that we have, so there is no imminent rush to announce the full driver line-up for 2025.”
