Damon Hill offers insight into why Red Bull might disregard Carlos Sainz. According to Damon Hill, Carlos Sainz’s potential role as a secondary driver could hinder his chances of joining Red Bull.
With Lewis Hamilton slated to take his place at Ferrari in 2025, Sainz finds himself without a confirmed seat for the upcoming season. Additionally, Red Bull might need to fill a vacancy, unless they decide to extend Sergio Perez’s contract.
Speaking to Sky Sports, former F1 champion Hill emphasized the importance of Sainz securing a position with a leading team next year, stating, “It would be a travesty if Carlos doesn’t find himself in a front-running team next year.
“He deserves to be in a top team. He’s running at the front. What’s available? Mercedes is the obvious one. Red Bull? I can’t see how that works, with Max there. The team is run by the Verstappen family, isn’t it? It is basically their team.
“I can’t see how they will allow anyone…Unless he is prepared to be a good No2. But, then, Checo is doing a very good job there, doing that role.”
The intricacies of the No2 driver role could be pivotal in Red Bull’s decision on Verstappen’s teammate for the upcoming year.
Sergio Perez has showcased his prowess this season, securing second place behind Verstappen in three out of four Grand Prix races, delivering optimal results for Red Bull. However, recent victories by non-Red Bull drivers, notably Carlos Sainz of Ferrari in the last two races, highlight his competitive edge.
Despite overcoming appendix surgery and missing a round, Sainz triumphed in Australia and secured a podium finish in Japan, showcasing his resilience and skill.
Unlike Ferrari, who operate without a clear No1 and No2 driver policy with Sainz and Charles Leclerc, Red Bull unequivocally positions Verstappen as their top contender. The uncertainty lies in whether Sainz would be willing to assume a subordinate role at Red Bull, given his track record and competitive spirit.
